3. Supernova

A supernova happens when a star explodes. Although there is no reason to believe our sun is getting ready to blow its top anytime soon, the possibility is certainly not out of the question, and if it happens it will burn the Earth and all its inhabitants to a crisp. The energy that’s released from a supernova is about the same amount of energy that a star has produced over its entire lifetime.
