11. SSRIs

This next one is a pretty weird side effect, but is certainly no laughing matter. A class of antidepressants called SSRIs or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors can prompt thoughts of suicide, particularly in young people. It certainly seems odd that medications designed to help people out of depression could cause them to want to end their own lives. It appears to be another indication of just how much the experts and professionals do not know about the human brain. There’s no doubt that SSRIs are used very successfully to treat depression in many people, but caution is strongly advised when prescribed, particularly for young people.
