3. A Good Beating

A medical textbook from the 9th Century contained some absurd treatments that are almost laughable today. For a headache, the patient was to be beaten with the hide of a dolphin. Following the beating, the book suggests, “he will soon feel better.” Perhaps it was simply a case of the pain from the beating taking his mind off of the pain from his headache.
