Where eating disorders are concerned, we’re probably most familiar with those that affect young women. The type that cause them to starve themselves in a futile attempt to make their body “acceptable” to their own distorted view of what the “perfect” body should look like. There are, in fact, a whole host of eating disorders that you have probably never heard of. These disorders demonstrate the amazing complexities of the human brain, and the astounding variety of ways that it can shape a person’s reality, transforming their lives into one filled with suffering, misery and even death.
This is a condition that will often go hand-in-hand with both bulimia and anorexia, and is often the driving force that fuels the behavior that characterizes those disorders. People with body dysmorphic disorder do not see themselves the same way others do. They often believe that they have serious bodily defects that do not actually exist, such as the perception that they are too fat, unattractive or have other physical problems that exist only in their own minds.
