While some aviation mysteries leaving investigators without a trace of evidence, other cases where both the aircraft and occupants are located can also end with more lingering questions than answers. In 1957, there was no way to fly that was much more luxurious than a trip aboard Pan Am’s “Clipper Romance of the Skies,” a Boeing Stratocruiser passenger liner. On a flight from the west coast of the United States to the Island of Hawaii the aircraft vanished without a trace. Almost a week later search crews were able to locate the plane which was bobbing in the Pacific far from its original flight path. The passengers and crew appeared to have died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. The cause of the tragedy was never determined.
