For centuries, inventors chased one of the most tantalizing impossible dreams in mechanics: a machine that, once started, would run forever without any outside source of energy. Physics eventually made clear that such a device violates basic thermodynamic laws and simply cannot exist. That inconvenient fact didn’t stop Charles Redheffer, a little-known Philadelphia man, from convincing thousands of people in 1812 that he’d built exactly that — and from turning the illusion into a genuinely profitable con before two separate cities caught him.
Charles Redheffer surfaces in the historical record rather suddenly in 1812, with almost nothing known about his life before that point. He rented a house on the outskirts of Philadelphia, near the banks of the Schuylkill River, and installed inside it a strange mechanical device: a gravity-driven apparatus built around a large horizontal gear connected to a shaft, with a smaller gear interlocked alongside it. Weights sat on angled ramps positioned on the gear, and Redheffer claimed the pressure of those weights alone generated enough continuous force to keep the entire mechanism spinning indefinitely, with no external power required.
To the curious residents of Philadelphia, this was nothing short of miraculous, and Redheffer wasted no time capitalizing on the sensation. He charged admission for the privilege of viewing the machine in action, with reported prices ranging anywhere from one to five dollars depending on the account. Word spread quickly, and the machine became genuinely famous, sparking heated public debate over whether the legendary, physically impossible dream of perpetual motion had finally been achieved. Sizable wagers were reportedly placed around town on the question of its authenticity.
Buoyed by the excitement and financial success, Redheffer grew ambitious. He petitioned the Pennsylvania state government for funding to construct a much larger version of his machine, presumably hoping to parlay his roadside curiosity into serious public investment.
That request for public funds proved to be Redheffer’s undoing. Rather than simply handing over money, the state sent a delegation of commissioners to inspect the device before committing any funds, among them a respected local figure named Nathan Sellers. Sellers brought his young son, Coleman, along for the visit — a decision that would prove decisive.
Redheffer kept his inspectors at arm’s length, allowing them to observe the machine only through a window rather than up close, ostensibly to protect the delicate mechanism from interference. But young Coleman Sellers noticed something the grown men in the room had overlooked: the teeth of the machine’s gears were worn down on the wrong side. Gears that were genuinely being driven by the internal weight-and-ramp mechanism, as Redheffer claimed, would show wear consistent with that motion. Instead, the pattern of wear indicated the opposite — that the smaller gear was actually driving the larger apparatus, not the other way around. In other words, some hidden external power source, not the machine’s own internal weights, was what kept the whole contraption turning.
Rather than confronting Redheffer outright, the elder Sellers took a subtler and more devastating approach. He commissioned a skilled local engineer and instrument maker named Isaiah Lukens to secretly construct a duplicate machine, built on the same ostensible principle, but with its own concealed power source hidden even more cleverly than Redheffer’s. Once complete, the commissioners invited Redheffer to view Lukens’s version. According to several accounts, Redheffer was so convinced it was a genuine, functioning rival to his own invention that he was reportedly eager to learn its secret and even offered money to be let in on it. Rather than exposing him publicly on the spot, the commissioners simply let the truth about the hoax quietly circulate through Philadelphia society. Realizing the game was up, Redheffer fled the city.
Communication between American cities in the early nineteenth century traveled slowly, and Redheffer used that delay to his advantage. He resurfaced not long afterward in New York City with a rebuilt version of his machine and once again began charging admission to eager crowds who hadn’t yet heard of his Philadelphia disgrace.
This second act didn’t last much longer than the first. Among the New York spectators was Robert Fulton, the celebrated engineer best known for developing the first commercially successful steamboat. Fulton didn’t need to inspect any gear teeth to spot the deception — he simply listened. He noted that the machine’s motion was subtly unsteady and irregular in a way that no genuinely self-sustaining mechanical system would be, and concluded on the spot that it had to be powered by some hidden, inconsistent human effort rather than a smooth, continuous internal force.
According to the most commonly repeated version of events, Fulton had a section of wall near the machine torn open, revealing an elderly, bearded man tucked away in a hidden space, calmly turning a hand crank with one hand while eating a crust of bread with the other. The concealed man had been quietly supplying the “perpetual” motion the entire time.
With his second exposure, Redheffer’s brief and lucrative career as a fraudulent inventor came to an end, and he faded from New York much as he had disappeared from Philadelphia. Historical records offer little detail about what became of him afterward, and surprisingly little is known even about his life before the scheme began.
What survives instead is the replica machine built by Isaiah Lukens to expose him, which remains in the collection of Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute to this day — a fitting artifact, since it was itself a fake built to catch a fake. Redheffer’s story endures as one of the most famous and well-documented perpetual motion hoaxes in American history, a reminder of how persuasive a confident showman with a clever mechanical illusion could be in an era when the underlying laws of thermodynamics weren’t yet fully understood or widely known by the general public — and of how a single sharp-eyed child, or a single skeptical pair of ears, could bring the whole illusion crashing down.
