On August 2, 1947 a Avro Lancastrian airliner known as “Star Dust” operated by British South American Airways left Buenos Aries on its way to Santiago, Chile. Although an extensive search was conducted in the area that ultimately revealed itself as the correct location, the aircraft was not located at the time. It was ultimately discovered in 2000 when the wreckage of the plane began to show itself in melting glacial ice and snow on Mount Tupungato in the Argentine Andes. It is believed that the pilot became confused during flight and believed he had already passed over the mountains which caused him to descended too soon, resulting in the crash which claimed 11 lives.
