In most cases, a drive-by shooting involves rival gang members, but James Swann, Jr. decided it would be a good way to kill random victims on the sidewalks of Washington, D.C. during 1993. Because he used a 20-gauge shotgun to carry out the attacks, he was dubbed “The Shotgun Stalker.” He carried out a total of 14 attacks which killed five and injured four more. Swann claimed that he was motivated by voices in his head, including a voice he claimed was that of Malcom X. Swann was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was confined in Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital where he remains today.
