It is exactly what it sounds like, a petroleum derivative that is often used in to keep skin moist or to make hair shiny. That sounds all well-and-good until you discover that this additive is sometimes contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PHAs, which over prolonged periods of exposure, may cause cancer.
