Bacteria are amazingly adaptable and diverse forms of life that can make us sick or, in the case of beneficial bacteria, even prevent us from getting sick by fighting off harmful bacteria. As amazing as it sounds, these tiny life forms may also be able to provide us with energy. Some bacteria, like E. coli, for example, store some of their food supply in the form of fatty acids that are a bit like polyester. These are the same types of fatty acids that are used to produce biodiesel fuels. Scientists hope to be able to manipulate the genetic structure of bacteria and make them over-produce these fatty acids that can then be used to make fuel to generate energy.
