Terror Under the Tracks: The Chilling Legend of Virginia’s Bunny Man Bridge

Hidden beneath a quiet railroad overpass in northern Virginia lies one of America’s strangest and most unsettling urban legends. Known locally as the “Bunny Man Bridge,” the site near Clifton has inspired decades of ghost stories, whispered warnings, and late-night curiosity seekers. Part horror tale, part historical mystery, the legend of the Bunny Man continues to haunt imaginations long after its bizarre beginnings.

The bridge itself, officially called the Colchester Overpass, is an otherwise unremarkable railroad crossing tucked away in a wooded area of Fairfax County. Yet over time, it became associated with stories of a terrifying figure said to roam the area dressed in a rabbit costume and wielding an axe or hatchet.

According to one popular version of the legend, the Bunny Man was an escaped asylum inmate. The story claims that years ago, a bus transporting mentally ill patients crashed nearby, allowing several inmates to escape into the woods. Most were eventually captured—except one. Residents allegedly began finding mutilated rabbits hanging from trees, evidence that the fugitive had survived in the wilderness. Eventually, the story says, he became violent and murderous, haunting the bridge and attacking anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path.

Another version paints an even darker picture. In this telling, a troubled young man dressed in a bunny suit murdered his family on Easter before hanging himself beneath the bridge. His restless spirit supposedly returned to terrorize trespassers, particularly teenagers daring enough to visit after dark. Some variations claim that anyone caught near the bridge at midnight risks being attacked—or worse.

Like many enduring legends, the Bunny Man story contains fragments of truth wrapped in layers of embellishment. While there is no evidence of escaped asylum inmates or supernatural killings at the bridge, something unusual really did happen in the area in 1970. Police reports documented encounters with an unidentified man dressed in a rabbit costume who threatened people and vandalized property with a hatchet.

In one incident, a couple sitting in a parked car reported that a man wearing what appeared to be a rabbit outfit angrily approached them, shouting that they were trespassing before throwing a hatchet through their car window. Days later, a security guard encountered a similarly dressed individual chopping at a porch support on a newly built home. After briefly confronting the strange figure, the guard watched him disappear into the woods.

The mysterious “Bunny Man” was never identified, and the bizarre incidents quickly captured public attention. Newspapers reported the story, and over time, local imagination transformed an unsettling but isolated episode into a sprawling supernatural myth.

Today, Bunny Man Bridge attracts curious visitors, paranormal enthusiasts, and thrill-seeking teenagers hoping for a glimpse of something eerie. Local authorities, however, have frequently warned against trespassing, noting that the area remains active railroad property and can be dangerous for nighttime explorers.

The legend’s staying power may come from its unusual blend of absurdity and menace. A rabbit costume, typically associated with innocence and childhood, becomes deeply unsettling when paired with violence and mystery. The contrast makes the Bunny Man difficult to forget.

Whether viewed as folklore, cautionary tale, or misunderstood local history, the Bunny Man Bridge legend remains one of America’s most peculiar ghost stories. Beneath the shadow of the railroad tracks, where darkness gathers and sounds echo strangely through the tunnel, it is easy to understand why the tale refuses to disappear.
