We can only imagine that the very geekiest of vocabulary nerds would ever use a word like this. A ferrule is the little bit of metal that is used in the manufacture of pencils to secure the eraser. “I would normally have been happy to use the pencil Jack offered to let me borrow, but the ferrule was all chewed up and I didn’t want to catch herpes!”
