Many of us a familiar with the potential dangers of food colorings, and although it may strike some of us as a little gross, some of the red coloring you encounter in your food is actually made from insects. The cochineal beetle is an excellent source of red coloring, and they are ground up en masse to make food coloring. Gross, perhaps, but probably less likely to cause health problems than the artificial food colorings that are used. Some people, however, do have allergies to the bug-derived color that’s best known as carmine.
