Sounds delightful, no? Unfortunately, this stuff is about as beneficial as its name suggests. Used as a coloring agent in many cosmetic and hair care products, coal tar is a petroleum derivative that has been recognized as a carcinogen, meaning that it may cause cancer. Coal tar is also likely to contain heavy metals which can harm the nervous system.
