The Night the River Spoke: The 1973 Pascagoula Alien Encounter

On the evening of October 11, 1973, two shipyard workers in Pascagoula, Mississippi, experienced something that would change their lives and fascinate the world for decades. Charles Hickson and nineteen-year-old Calvin Parker were fishing off a pier on the Pascagoula River when they heard a strange, zipping sound. Looking up, they saw a football-shaped craft with flashing blue lights descending from the sky.

The account that followed is one of the most chilling and detailed alien abduction stories in history. According to Hickson and Parker, three strange creatures emerged from the craft. These beings were not the “grey aliens” of modern pop culture. Instead, they were described as being roughly five feet tall with pale, wrinkled skin, no necks, and pointed, carrot-like protrusions where ears and noses should be. Most bizarrely, their hands were shaped like lobster claws.

The creatures allegedly floated toward the two men and physically restrained them. Hickson claimed he was paralyzed by a “numbing” sensation as he was lifted into the craft. Once inside, he reported being examined by a large, mechanical “eye” that hovered over his body. Parker, on the other hand, was so overwhelmed by terror that he fainted almost immediately.

The encounter lasted only a few minutes, after which the men were returned to the riverbank. Terrified and confused, they initially hesitated to tell anyone. However, they eventually decided to report the incident to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Fred Diamond was understandably skeptical, but he decided to conduct a secret test. He left the two men alone in an interrogation room with a hidden tape recorder, expecting them to admit the whole thing was a prank.

Instead, the tape captured a conversation filled with genuine panic. Parker can be heard praying and expressing his sheer terror, while Hickson tries to calm him down. The lack of any “gotcha” moment or laughter behind closed doors convinced many, including the sheriff, that the men were telling the truth as they perceived it.

The story exploded in the national news. Within days, Pascagoula was swamped by reporters, scientists, and UFO enthusiasts. Famed astronomer and UFO researcher J. Allen Hynek arrived to interview the pair and concluded that they were indeed experiencing a “very real” psychological event.

Unlike many other paranormal stories that fade with time, the Pascagoula incident remained a consistent part of the town’s history. Both men underwent multiple polygraph tests and hypnosis sessions throughout their lives, never wavering from their original story. In 2019, the city of Pascagoula even installed a historical marker near the site of the abduction, cementing the event as a significant part of Mississippi folklore.

The 1973 encounter remains a quintessential example of the “weird news” of the 1970s. It was an era when the boundaries between science and the supernatural seemed to blur, and two ordinary men could become the center of a cosmic mystery that still defies explanation.
