It seems like no species can escape the dreaded flu, including canines. The strain that infects dogs is known as Type A (H3N8), and was first discovered in Florida in 2004. A vaccine has since been developed to help dogs ward off the likelihood of infection. Flu has much the same effect on dogs as it does on people – there are mild cases and severe cases. The mild cases usually end with a fairly quick recovery and no lasting complications, while a severe case can lead to life-threatening complications like pneumonia.
