4. Pilot Whales, Australia

The Australian state of Tasmania experienced a strange event during the latter part of 2008 when some 60 pilot whales beached themselves. If that weren’t strange enough, a similar scene played itself out just a week later when about 150 long-finned pilot whales did the same thing. But that wasn’t the end of it. In January of 2009, 45 sperm became stranded on a sandbar along the coast of Tasmania. In March things got even more bizarre when 194 pilot whales and a small number of dolphins beached themselves in the same area. Scientists were not able to explain the cause.
