A condition with an odd-sounding name has been taking a heavy tool on the bat population in North America. White-nosed syndrome is the result of a fungus that grows on the bat’s mouth and nose. The fungus interrupts their normal hibernation cycle and wakes them up prematurely, sending them out looking for food, which is scarce or non-existent during the winter months, causing many to die from starvation or the cold.
