A peculiar game called Soule has been played among the peasant populations of Normandy, Brittany and Picardy from the 12th century right on up until the 18th century. The object of the game, which often involved thousands of participants and bouts of violence, was to get a large ball into the net of the opposing team, or in some cases, just get it onto their territory. What made the games even more unusual is the fact that the goals could be miles apart and the games could last for several days.
