As brave and proficient as George Washington was while leading his forces during the American Revolution, he was not as fearless when it came to certain other matters. He was quite terrified by the prospect of being buried alive, which happened more frequently during the 18th century due to the inferiority of medical care of that time. Washington was so afraid of that fate that he made one of his attendants promise to leave his body untouched for two days following his death.
