A thousand years is a long time to hang onto a fashion trend that pretty much amounts to torture, but since it was so desirable for women to have small feet in China and other parts of Asia, the practice of foot-binding was not halted in China until 1949 when the Communists outlawed it. Foot-binding involves breaking the arch of the foot and then binding it tightly to prevent proper healing or growth. Some women has to live out their lives with feet that measured as little as three inches in total length!
