These scams often come on the telephone and the scam artist delivers a well-rehearsed pitch designed to convince their victims to make a donation to “charity.” Naturally, there is no charity and the scam artist simply pockets and donations they are lucky enough to receive. Even with charities that appear to be legitimate, it pays to do some research before writing that check. Many charities use most of the donations they receive to pay salaries and for perks like expensive cars and homes, and use only a small portion of the funds they collect to help whatever group it is they are claiming to be advocating for.
