This one is also most effective when the telephone is used, although some will use e-mail as well. The scam artist will usually claim to be an official with a taxing authority. The IRS or Internal Revenue Service is probably the one most often used in the U.S. These scammers are often very aggressive and will not hesitate to use threats and intimidation as they attempt to scare their victims into sending them money. The elderly are probably the scam artist’s favorite target for this one, although they may try it on anyone, since people are generally scared of the tax man no matter what country they are from.
