Although a trip to an actual dentist wasn’t possible during medieval times, “tooth-men” were the only option many people had. These practitioners often traveled with carnivals, servicing patients as they went. Although tooth extraction was practiced at the time, more unusual treatments for toothache included bloodletting, burning the nerves with acid or a hot iron and then rinsing with molten gold.
