You can be certain that any culture that likes to indulge in the consumption of alcoholic beverages is very familiar with the dreaded hangover. It may be known by a variety of different names depending on the region, but the misery is the same whether it’s a hangover in Kalamazoo, Michigan or Johannesburg, South Africa. Naturally, the quest for a cure for the hangover is something that’s been given a lot of thought by people the world over. It’s doubtful that many cures are actually effective other than some kind of strong painkiller medication, but that has not stopped people from trying. While some of these “cures” are extremely dubious, or even ridiculous, it’s not possible to rule them all out. Who knows? Some of these crazy-sounding remedies might actually help, and there’s only one way to find out.

1. Germany

 

For Germans, relief from a hangover requires a carefully-planned breakfast called katerfrühstück, which translates to “hangover breakfast.” It consists of raw, pickled herring wrapped around pieces of gherkin and onion. It is said to be most effective when eaten first thing in the morning before anything else.
