9. Deadly Treatment

As one might expect, vermin such as head lice were a problem during medieval times and doctors were always ready with their treatments. For head lice, thirteenth-century surgeon Jehan Yperman would cover a patient in mercury and have him stand in close proximity to a fire. The tricky part of this treatment was to be sure the toxic fumes killed the lice before they killed the patient!
