This zany idea was cooked up by the British who had a plan for a nuclear landmine that would be buried in Germany and detonated to foil the advancing Red Army in the event that the cold war ever turned “hot.” The problem was the engineers doubted the landmine’s ability to detonate unless it was kept at a certain temperature. They actually considered putting live chickens inside the landmine’s casing with enough feed to keep them alive for a time while their body heat kept it from cooling off too much. Why they didn’t simply call it “Operation Blue Chicken” is not known.
