8. Egypt Air Flight 990

After departing from New York’s John F. Kennedy airport in 1999, Egypt Air 990 plummeted into the Atlantic Ocean, ending the lives of 217 passengers and crew. The pilot of the Boeing 767 was supposedly heard saying, “I rely on God” before the plane crashed. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the pilot had decided to commit suicide but it’s still unclear if that was the case or if the aircraft experienced some type of serious malfunction. Safety officials in Egypt concluded that the crash was due to mechanical failure, so it seems as if the truth will never be known with certainty.
