Now that’s a weird name for a bird for sure, but it’s a name that was well-earned. These birds feed primarily on just about anything that’s found in a beehive including honey, bee eggs, bee larvae, and beeswax. The “guide” part comes due to their ability to guide people to bee hives to collect honey. Although bees probably aren’t too happy to see one of these hanging around the hive, these birds are not a welcome sight for other nesting birds in its vicinity. It’s parasitic reproductive habits involve laying a single egg in the nest of another bird and when the predatory hatchling emerges, it pecks the rightful resident hatchlings to death and is raised by the unsuspecting parental birds as their own. It is native to in sub-Saharan Africa.
