5. Mumps

Mumps was not at all uncommon in humans previous to the development of vaccines, particularly young children. Fortunately, mumps was not known to cause serious or life-threatening symptoms in the vast majority of children who contracted it. What’s kind of surprising is that mumps can be passed along from humans to dogs. A dog infected with mumps will likely show signs of swollen salivary glands – the primary symptom in both humans and dogs who are infected with the virus.
