Winning the $65.4 million is a pretty good reason to quit your job, and that is what both Mack Metcalf and Virginia Metcalf Merida did. Although they were still married, they were no longer together and decided that their best course of action was to take a $34 million one-time payment, split it evenly and go their separate ways. The law soon caught up with Mr. Metcalf and he was ordered to pay $31,000 in child support as well as $800,000 to establish a trust fund for his children from a previous marriage. Two years later he was dead due to complications brought about by drinking. His wife met a similar fate. She was found dead in her home within 5 years of collecting her winnings. Her death did not appear to be the result of a crime or other suspicious activity.
