6. Whipped Into Shape

The Fulani are a nomadic people that mostly live in West Africa. The ritual employed for the purposes of making a man from a boy involves two boys competing each other by whipping one another with sticks they have carefully prepared to inflict maximum pain. The two boys take turns whipping each other as a crowd observes. The one who remains more stoic during the ordeal and shows the least amount of fear and pain is declared the winner. The wisdom of the assembled crowd is responsible for determining the winner.
