4. The Pork and Beans War

Although it sounds like it might make a good title for a comedy movie, the thought of an impending battle between British-controlled Canada and the United States during the winter of 1838-1838 was no laughing matter. Troops on both sides aligned themselves on their respective sides of the border and prepared for battle. In a generous stroke of luck, war never broke out and it was decided that it was best to fall back on diplomacy. The war got it’s unusual name from the food that soldiers ate while milling around waiting for a war that never happened.
