A novel by Japanese author Koushun Takami called Battle Royale has a very similar plot and was also made into a movie. Suzanne Collins reportedly had not heard of it before writing The Hunger Games, but the success of her books and the movies put an end to plans that were set launch a remake of Battle Royale in the U.S.
