On April 26, 1976 James, an actor an comedian was on stage performing at the Sunderland Empire Theatre in North East England when he suddenly became unresponsive. The audience assumed it was part of the act and laughed in response to his behavior. James had suffered a heart attack and died about an hour later at the age of 62.
