For some odd reason, President Ford seemed to attract gun-wielding females who wanted to shoot him. In the first incident, a deranged former follower of murderer Charles Manson named Lynette “Squeky” Fromme tried to shoot Ford as he reached to shake her hand as he greeted onlookers in Sacramento, California on September 5, 1975. Fromme neglected to place a round in the chamber of the semi-automatic handgun she was using which probably resulted in a rather anti-climactic “click” before she was restrained by a secret service agent. Just 17 days later, another unstable woman named Sara Jane Moore took a shot at Ford with a .38-caliber revolver outside a hotel in San Francisco. Her first shot missed and she was grabbed by a former marine who was nearby who held her until she could be taken into custody.
