Simply using your credit or debit card to pay for something at a local store or withdraw money for any ATM machine could result in your information being scooped up. Hackers have used sophisticated means to vacuum up millions of credit and debit card numbers using a variety of techniques. Sometimes they just hack into the servers that retailers or banks use to store the information, and sometimes they go as far as actually installing devices on ATM machines or point-of-sale systems (think cash registers) that intercept all that juicy financial information that the machines process every day. There have also been cases where hackers have intercepted this same kind of data by eavesdropping on wireless networks used by retailers.
