Someone who realizes that something has been stolen from their car does not expect to be tipped off to the deed by starting the engine and noticing that is suddenly sounds like a Harley. The catalytic converter is a device that looks a lot like a muffler, but it actually occupies the space between the engine and the muffler as part of the cars exhaust system. It helps reduce pollution in a vehicle’s exhaust. It’s attractive to thieves because it contains valuable metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium – all of which can demand very high prices at scrap metal yards.
