4. Increased Herbicide Use

Plants may look pretty dumb too, but it turns out they’re perfectly capable of outsmarting the genetic mad scientists as well! In another brilliant move intended to make crop production more efficient, a gene was inserted into crops such as corn, rapeseed, soybeans and cotton that would make them resistant to certain herbicides such as Monsanto’s Glyphosate, the same ingredient used in the popular Round-up weed killer. Once again, mother nature didn’t seem too happy about man’s meddling, and the weeds that were targeted for destruction began to develop resistance to the herbicides that the crops were already genetically modified to resist! That meant that more and more herbicides had to be used to kill off the resistant weeds which will probably just prompt them to develop even stronger resistance to herbicides. And as well all know, the more pesticides there are on the food we eat, the healthier we will be! That’s called sarcasm for those that didn’t pick up on it.
