6. Neapolitan Mastiff

Although this breed could certainly be considered unusual, it’s by no means small! This hefty pooch can weigh as much as 160 pounds and can reach 31 inches in height at the shoulder. Another breed that originated in Italy, the Neapolitan Mastiff makes for a superb guard dog due to its size, fearsome appearance and protective nature. Despite an appearance that may influence the observer to think they aren’t too bright, they are actually quite intelligent and have a reputation as independent thinkers.
