5. Garter Snake

In most cases we think of mating as an activity that only involves two – even in the animal kingdom. Not so for garter snakes. After they spend the winter in a state of hibernation, male garter snakes gather in large groups that may contain as many as 30,000 individuals. They are waiting for females to appear, and when they do, it’s an all out party. As many as 100 males may attempt to mate with one female at the same time. Not something you want to stumble onto if you are afraid of snakes!
