5. Ancient Moss

The 9,500-year-old tree in Sweden is impressive but there’s some ordinary-looking moss growing in Hawaii that makes that tree seem like a toddler! This ancient moss, known as S. palustre, has also revealed a remarkable ability to clone itself. Scientists estimate that this particular moss has been cloning itself successfully for some 50,000 years. This discovery means that the moss may be one of the oldest multicellular organisms in the world.
