7. Giant Amoebas

Most people are probably familiar with the amoeba, a tiny one-celled creature that many high school students have viewed through science class microscopes. No microscope is required to view the one-celled giants that have been discovered in the deepest known location on earth – the Mariana Trench, some 6 miles below the ocean surface. At approximately 4 inches in length, the sponge-like critters are the largest single-celled life forms in the world. The remarkable creatures were spotted with the aid of specially-designed cameras that were lowered into the crushing depths of the trench.
