In a place where winter seems to last for just about the whole year you wouldn’t expect to see a tornado, but that’s exactly what happened during 2005 when one was spotted near Sand Point. With vast expanses of wilderness, it’s difficult to rule out the possibility of other tornadoes in Alaska’s past since they could have easily avoided detection. It’s doubtful that anyone actually wants to see a tornado near their home and thank goodness it’s a rare event in the far north. Those people have enough to deal with from long winters, blizzards, sub-zero temperatures and days that pass without nightfall.
