Perhaps the use of the word sloth to name this bear is a bit disarming since we normally think of the sloth as a slow-moving and quite passive critter. These bears are found in areas of India and Sri Lanka, and don’t have a reputation for being friendly towards people. They are often feared even more than tigers or venomous snakes due to the unusual and brutal way they dispatch their victims. Although they do not eat people, they are quite likely to attack those unfortunate enough to cross paths with them. For some reason they focus their attention on attacking the face, and using their sharp teeth and claws, can literally rip a person’s face off. One person per week is mauled by a sloth bear in India on average.
