9. Ohio Valley Filk Fest

Most of us have heard of rock, classical, pop, blues, and even grunge. They are all genres of music, of course, but have you ever heard of filk? Nope, we hadn’t either. Filk is described as music that’s on the folksy side and is somehow related to science fiction and fantasy, but that’s not really the definition of filk. In fact, there does not seem to be a universally-accepted definition of filk music. At any rate the Ohio Valley Filk Fest is one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the world, where enthusiasts gather and probably debate about the definition of filk. As the name suggests, the event takes place in Ohio every year and surely attracts a seriously nerdy crowd. We have nothing against nerds, of course. In fact, we believe there’s a little bit of nerd in all of us. The name, filk, by the way, supposedly was the result of a typographical error. Whether that error involved the word “film” or “folk” we have no idea.
