Buying a car in New Jersey carries an additional tax over and above the state’s 7 percent sales tax if the vehicle costs more than $45,000, or has a fuel economy rating worse than 19 miles-per-gallon. In those cases an additional 0.4 percent tax applies, which may not sound like much, but can really add up if you’re buying a $60,000 car.
