OK, so maybe we should have said hand, but frankly, we can’t even say that a frog has anything that could be called a hand. At any rate, the hairy frog is not only weird because of its name and its “hairy” appearance during mating season, this thing actually injures itself as part of its natural defense mechanism! When threatened, this little charmer is able to force sharp claw-like bones through the skin on the end of its toes. Kind of like a cat’s retractable claws but not quite so elegant. It’s name comes from the tendency these critters have to grow long hair-like strands of skin along the side of its body during mating season, reportedly to allow for better oxygen absorption, but we rather like to think it is because it makes them so darn attractive.
