Although the legendary Tasmanian devil really doesn’t look a whole heck of a lot like the one that tried, unsuccessfully, to terrorize Bugs Bunny on so many occasions, the real thing is about as nuts as the cartoon version. Despite the fact that a momma Tasmanian devil only has four teats available to feed her young, they often give birth to between 30 and 50 offspring. This makes for quite a ruckus in the mother’s pouch as the infant marsupials battle for a place to feed. Like some gruesome version of Roman gladiators with fur, the baby devils bite, claw and scratch their way into the world as they attempt to kill off their siblings. No more than a few of them manage to survive, and those that do often emerge from their mother’s pouch displaying scars from mortal combat. We no longer worry why they are called devils!
