4. A Sandwich

 

Those of us that recall stories from the early days of space flight probably remember learning about what astronauts ate during their missions, and it didn’t sound all that appetizing. Eating meals from toothpaste-type tubes and drinking nothing but Tang could easily make someone develop a hankering for something that better resembled real food. That may be what prompted astronaut John Young to sneak a corned beef sandwich on board during the Gemini III mission in 1965. It was reported that he was severely reprimanded due to the risk of crumbs from the sandwich getting into sensitive instruments aboard the spacecraft.
